The Historical Capital of Caraga

Agusan del Norte is the political, cultural, and economic capital of Caraga Region. It is home to two cities: Butuan — the Regional Center and one of the most historically significant cities in the Philippines — and Cabadbaran, the provincial capital. The province sits at the mouth of the Agusan River, the second-longest river in the Philippines, which drains an enormous watershed from the mountains of Bukidnon all the way to Butuan Bay.

Butuan City is where Philippine history was literally buried in the riverbanks — the ancient Balanghai boats discovered at Libertad in 1976 rewrote the timeline of Philippine civilisation, proving a sophisticated seafaring culture existed here since at least 320 AD. The Balanghai Ethnological Museum and the National Museum branch in Butuan house the world's finest collection of pre-colonial Philippine artefacts.

Beyond history, the province offers natural attractions including Masao Beach along Butuan Bay, the Bood Promontory Eco-Park, and easy access to the Agusan River system — the lifeblood of Caraga.

Balanghai Ethnological Museum & Boat Shrine

The crown jewel of Butuan City's heritage — the Balanghai Boat Shrine in Libertad houses the actual excavated ancient boats in their original burial positions, preserved in a climate-controlled structure. Over ten boats have been recovered from the site, carbon-dated to as far back as 320 AD. They represent some of the oldest watercraft found in Southeast Asia. The adjacent Balanghai Ethnological Museum displays gold artefacts, burial jars, Chinese trade ceramics, and jewellery recovered from the site — a treasury of pre-colonial Philippine civilisation that rivals any museum in Manila.

National Museum of the Philippines — Butuan Branch

The Butuan branch of the National Museum of the Philippines houses an extraordinary collection of artefacts recovered from archaeological excavations across Caraga — Butuan gold masks, the famous Butuan Silver Paleograph, pre-colonial pottery, trade goods from China and Southeast Asia, and ethnographic items from Caraga's indigenous peoples. The museum tells the complete story of Caraga's civilisation across 2,000 years. Admission is free. The building itself is situated near Butuan City Hall in the centre of the city.

Masao Beach

Butuan City's nearest beach destination, located along Butuan Bay in the Masao district. Masao is a long, grey-sand beach backed by coconut palms and casuarina trees, popular with locals especially on weekends and holidays. The beach has calmer waters than the open Pacific and is ideal for swimming, beach picnics, and watching spectacular sunsets over the bay. Several beachfront resorts, restaurants, and cottages line the shore. It's easily accessible by tricycle from Butuan City centre in about 20 minutes.

Bood Promontory Eco-Park

A forested hill rising from the coastline of Buenavista municipality, offering panoramic views of Butuan Bay and the surrounding lowlands. The Bood Promontory has been developed into a community eco-park with nature trails, picnic areas, and tree planting zones. The area is also historically significant — it is believed to be the site where Spanish explorer Miguel Lopez de Legazpi planted the first cross in Mindanao during his 1565 expedition, establishing the first Spanish colonial settlement in the island. A cross monument marks the historic spot.

Cathedral of Saint Joseph — Butuan

The Cathedral of Saint Joseph is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Butuan and the spiritual heart of the city. The current structure, with its distinctive twin towers, stands on the site of an earlier church established by Augustinian missionaries in the 17th century. It is the venue of the annual Kahimunan Festival procession and the Balanghai Festival's fluvial Mass. The cathedral's interior houses notable religious art and a historic collection of devotional objects. The surrounding Butuan City Plaza is the social and civic centre of the city.

Agusan River — The Great River of Caraga

The Agusan River is the lifeblood of the entire Caraga region — the second-longest river in the Philippines at 390 kilometres, draining a watershed of over 10,000 km². At Butuan City, the river widens into a broad, navigable waterway lined with stilt houses, bangka boats, and river communities. Guided boat tours along the Agusan River offer a fascinating glimpse into river life, riverside communities, and the lush riparian ecosystem. The river is the backdrop for both the Balanghai Festival's spectacular fluvial parade and the Kahimunan procession every year.

Nasipit & Butuan Bay Coastline

Nasipit is Caraga's main seaport, handling cargo and inter-island passenger ferries connecting Caraga to Cebu, Manila, and other major ports. The municipality sits on Butuan Bay and has a peaceful waterfront promenade popular for early morning walks. The bay itself offers scenic views at sunrise and sunset, and traditional fishing boats can be seen departing before dawn. The nearby Kinabigtasan Beach in Nasipit is a quiet getaway for swimming and relaxation with a local atmosphere free from tourist commercialism.

How to Get to Agusan del Norte

By Air

Bancasi Airport (BXU) in Butuan City is served by Cebu Pacific, Philippine Airlines, and AirAsia with multiple daily flights from Manila and Cebu. Flight time from Manila is approximately 1.5 hours. The airport is 10 minutes from the city centre by taxi or tricycle.

By Sea

Nasipit Port in Agusan del Norte serves RORO and passenger vessels from Cebu (Pier 1), Manila, and other major ports. Shipping lines include Cokaliong, Lorenzo, and SuperFerry. The journey from Cebu to Nasipit takes approximately 8–10 hours.

By Bus

Butuan serves as the main bus hub for all of Caraga. Air-conditioned buses connect Butuan to Davao City (~4 hrs), Cagayan de Oro (~3 hrs), Surigao City (~2.5 hrs), and Tandag City (~4 hrs). Bachelor Express and Philtranco are major operators.

Taxis, tricycles, and e-bikes are abundant in Butuan City. Jeepneys run major routes. For the Balanghai Boat Shrine and Masao Beach, tricycles are the easiest option. For provincial tours, renting a car or van with a driver is recommended. GrabCar service is available in Butuan City.
